A Trip Down Memory Lane

At the weekend, I went on an accidental trip down memory lane. Having dropped the kids off to a day at the Tate, I had the luxury of an uninterrupted lunch with husband, and we still had time left over.

“I grew up around here,” I declared. Of course he knew but I’d never actually shown him where so off we sauntered, just a five minute walk from The Cut, to the 1930s council housing estate I spent my formative years. Nothing much had changed, although I imagine for its setting, that the number of council tenants was far fewer than in my day.

This patch of prime real estate could fetch a pretty number if it were redeveloped and under the current government plans, could become a grim reality. Walking into the quaint red-brick estate was like going back in time. The tiny gardens of the ground floor homes were abundant with flowers and foliage, the balconies as in my day were dressed in flower pots and tomato plants. The very few parking spaces were now assigned to those who can afford permits so making the place still pretty much car fee, as in my day when most residents couldn’t afford a car. Alas there weren’t the groups of kids I was once part of playing in the central area, probably because the price of rents has out priced young families and I imagine most residents are either retired or career-minded child-free couples. But what husband most remarked on was the peace. Even though we were a stone’s throw from Waterloo Station, there was no traffic noise, probably due to the clever design of the estate to face inwards to a community courtyard area. When I lived here I walked everywhere to school, local shops, friends’ houses. I don’t really recall taking the underground anywhere or train despite our very close proximity to it. Nowadays my own kids expect to be driven to friends’ houses, shops although I make sure they are quite accustomed too to public transport taking the bus to school and we venture often up to London from Essex by train.

We began to walk back to the Tate, still with time on our hands so we called into a very local traditional pub (now with the London trend of a Thai restaurant) with some very central London prices! We also checked out the prices of a 2 bedroom Victorian workers cottage up for sale on Roupell Street and gawked at the £1.4m price tag. I knew a family from this street and have vague memories of a very run down area. How times have changed!

I am proud of where I grew up though, as it made me a people person, able to mix with everyone, something my husband notices with some envy when we meet strangers for the first time. I moved schools several times also, again forcing me from an early age to readjust each time and be open to new things. We are now talking about moving abroad, and the only thing I can think is what a memory that will give to my children!
