Tennis vs Talk

Audrey Snee - WSSJ

It was one of the hottest days of the year and the Ladies final at Wimbledon so I wasn’t sure what to expect when I arrived at the Ursuline High School in Brentwood, the location for my talk to the Brentwood Writers Group. I arrived early and cheekily took up the parking space of the Headmistress – a small act of rebellion, as a former Ursuline pupil (at their Wimbledon school, rather ironic given the day’s date).

I was met by the very affable Colin Taylor, a marvelous children’s author and storyteller (www.colintaylortales.com). Colin is the outgoing chair of the Brentwood Writers Circle, a collection of writers from all walks of life and generations. “We may not get many today,” he warned me, given the rare British summer had arrived and that the final was about to start. But soon the room began to fill and not with just the members but plenty of new guests too who had heard through word-of-mouth about the talk. The temperature began to rise as more people arrived, and it being a Victorian red brick building although sadly without the sash windows, it was soon an oven.

I tried a technique given to me by a teacher friend when trying to keep pupils concentrating that is by raising and lowering your voice and using hand actions and moving around. Yet it didn’t go unnoticed that some of the older generation were shutting their eyes. Time for Q&A I told them and the first question was about Sex and Japan. I have never seen an audience sit up so quickly. Obviously not a ploy to be used in classrooms but interesting none-the-less, say the word and you will have everyone’s attention! The question related to how differently women and men are treated but did soon digress into many other areas and raised quite a few laughs and titters.

The time flew and I read a couple of paragraphs from my novel but not the one I knew would really have them laughing out loud, the scene where Conor goes into the pub to hear the old fellas discussing the new red head who has opened the hair salon, but end up comparing her ample bossom to their sows’s udder only for one of their wives to then walk in. My book is quite dark in places so I like to add in these comical moments, which are taken from my own time in the Mayo bars late at night listening to such jovial banter.

I am sure it is where I get my storytelling knack from, as it is in the soul of most Irish people to tell a yarn. To do it on a hot day in a stuffy classroom with over 60 people present and get some fantastic feedback also, makes it all the more rewarding!

If you live in the Essex area, the Brentwood Writers Circle is a great place to meet new writing friends and guests are always welcome. Find out more here: http://www.brentwoodwriterscircle.org/
